Eastman Lee Architects believes in creating architecture that is thoughtfully simple and sustainably timeless.
Founded in 2020 by Christopher Eastman and Tom Lee, our work is grounded in the belief that architecture can transform lives in meaningful ways.
Based in Chicago and Philadelphia, our practice values listening before speaking, research before conjecture, and thinking before action. Guided by each project’s unique circumstances, we prefer distillation to addition, and are intrigued by the complexity of projects at all scales and across typologies.
Our approach is driven by a shared desire to create architecture of the highest design, functional, and material quality.
Our dedication to how we practice is rooted in the process of making, the nature of how we experience space, and an underlying spirit of authenticity.
We shy away from trends.
Instead, we focus on the core elements of proportion, daylight, and careful arrangement of space that will remain relevant for years to come. We believe architecture can serve as a quiet backdrop for life and its memories, and we consider this responsibility a privilege.
We rigorously maintain a collaborative spirit, and an underlying ethos of respect and integrity that includes our clients, collaborators, and consultants.
We value the importance of context and place, which we believe can suggest successful outcomes when carefully understood. We respect the inherent beauty of time and seek to find dialogues between old and new, carefully curating how our buildings can age gracefully. We see architecture as the essential interface between our lives and the environment, connecting people and place.
Together, we have over 30 years of professional experience in a diverse range of award-winning projects that includes residential, commercial, cultural, retail, workplace, and education for both public and private clients.
We work closely together on all projects, balancing Tom’s penchant for asking “what if” with Chris pursuing the “how.”
Chris has a lifelong interest in the craft of architecture. His fascination with the nature of materials enriches the quality of our work and has fostered numerous relationships with builders and craftsmen on a variety of projects. Over the course of 16 years at Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, Chris managed a wide range of project types, including residential and flagship retail buildings. Chris holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree and a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Cincinnati and is a registered architect in Pennsylvania, Illinois and Ohio.
Tom is an award-winning designer who endeavors to make architecture that is simple, memorable, and timeless. He invites collaboration and is adept at cultivating ideas into a shared vision while respecting budget, place, and the environment. Prior to co-founding Eastman Lee Architects, Tom was a Design Principal at HDR, and has worked at other leading firms including John Ronan Architects, Goettsch Partners, JAHN, and Kohn Pedersen Fox. He has served as a guest critic at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, IIT, School of the Art Institute, University of Cincinnati, and MIT. Tom holds a Master of Architecture degree from MIT and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree from the University of Cincinnati. Tom is a registered architect in Illinois and Wisconsin.
